From the age of about 13 onwards, I’ve suffered from higher-than-seems-normal levels of anxiety, and while I have actually primarily come to terms with being tense and a bit doomy, I certainly wouldn’t mind being less so. I’ve had counselling prior to, and it does help.
And drawing back from my own (fairly subtle) issues for a moment, could e-counselling be the answer to the mental health concerns intensifying amongst under-30s? With cuts to mental health services truly starting to bite, digitised treatment could be just the ticket for young people who currently filter nearly every element of their lives– friends, work, sex, entertainment– through a screen.
Not everyone is totally encouraged that moving psychological healthcare online is the way forward. “For me, what operate in therapy is when you meet somebody in person, in the very same room,” states London-based psychotherapist Sandra Tapie. “You are familiar with not only what it’s like to speak with the person, but how it feels to be in a room with them. Using Skype is the next best thing: it’s ‘sufficient’, but it does not create the closeness, the intimacy, that actually gets people to open up and explore things.”
” I’ve performed some research study into Skype counselling,” states London-based psychotherapist Dr Aaron Balick, “and it’s not the ‘functional equivalent’ of standard counselling; it’s simply not quite the exact same thing. It’s actually important that individuals who participate in it know that it’s a various experience from being in the room with someone, speaking face-to-face.”

” In terms of accessibility, it’s an excellent start and definitely better than nothing. It’ll hopefully lead them to ultimately appearing in the room. If you’re struggling with relationship concerns, accessory issues, or much deeper problems, it’s better to be in the space with somebody. Skype and the internet uses a range from your counsellor that might not be useful.”
In cases of mild depression, the NHS is now directing some patients towards online programmes rather than in person counselling, a phenomenon that worries Dr Balick.
If it’s rolled out simply to conserve money and there aren’t vital concerns being asked about these services, that’s not great. Then, I’m always extremely sceptical of people who are either very really professional or very very against online psychological health care.

Filtering that through immediate messaging may be practical if you find the idea of baring your soul to a complete stranger a bit awks. You won’t get the exact same connection as with in person counselling, but the semi-anonymity might make it much easier to open up if you have actually been drinking two bottles of rum and dancing around in your dead nan’s wedding dress every night.
