Anyhow, as it takes place, I am slightly fine-tuned in the head– so well played, Facebook algorithms. From the age of about 13 onwards, I’ve experienced higher-than-seems-normal levels of stress and anxiety, and while I’ve mostly come to terms with being jittery and a bit doomy, I definitely wouldn’t mind being less so. I have actually had counselling before, and it does assist. Could e-counselling not only re-hinge my mind, but do so without me having to put pants on and leave the house?

And pulling back from my own (relatively low-key) concerns for a moment, could e-counselling be the answer to the mental health issues escalating amongst under-30s? With cuts to psychological health services actually starting to bite, digitised therapy could be just the ticket for young adults who currently filter nearly every element of their lives– good friends, work, sex, entertainment– through a screen.

Not everybody is entirely convinced that shifting mental health care online is the way forward. “You get to know not only what it’s like to talk to the person, but how it feels to be in a space with them.

” I’ve performed some research into Skype counselling,” says London-based psychotherapist Dr Aaron Balick, “and it’s not the ‘functional equivalent’ of standard counselling; it’s simply not quite the exact same thing. It’s truly important that individuals who participate in it know that it’s a various experience from being in the space with someone, speaking in person.”

” In terms of availability, it’s a good start and absolutely better than nothing. It’ll hopefully lead them to eventually showing up in the room. However, if you’re dealing with relationship issues, attachment issues, or much deeper problems, it’s better to be in the space with somebody. Skype and the internet uses a distance from your counsellor that may not be valuable.”

In cases of mild depression, the NHS is now directing some patients towards online programs instead of in person counselling, a phenomenon that worries Dr Balick.

” My worry is that it’s occurring a growing number of for financial reasons, instead of since it’s what’s finest for individuals. That’s not excellent if it’s rolled out simply to conserve money and there aren’t important concerns being asked about these services. However then, I’m always very sceptical of people who are either really extremely professional or very extremely versus online mental health care. It’s a case of asking the right questions.”

Well, if the future of mental healthcare is everything about IMs, FaceTime and ‘OMG, which neuroses R U?’ quizzes, I decided I ‘d learn what that brave new world would resemble. I registered for 4 very different online psychological health services– ranging in cost from totally free to , 100 a month– and ran my anxieties through them all, all at once, for a week. Here’s what I discovered.

What I’m doing here is reviewing my experience of using each psychological health service, rather than its efficiency – since even the most wizard-like therapist isn’t going to ‘treat’ you in just one week. Okay, cool – let’s mental health!

How does it work?

As seen on FB (by me, anyhow), United States business is the business behemoth of the e-counselling video game. They declare to have 500 certified counsellors working for them, each with a minimum of 3 years of experience.

After completing a questionnaire to determine what specific flavour of mental you are, you’re coupled with a counsellor, who you can mercilessly switch for a different one at any time. (I got Dr. Laura Dabney, from Virginia). You then begin an instant messaged treatment session that both you and your counsellor can drop in and out of, and which could, in theory, continue till one of you ultimately died.

What does it cost?

You get a totally free seven-day trial – much like a free Netflix or Amazon Prime trial, other than with way more questions about what your childhood resembled. After that, it costs from , 24.50 a week for limitless message-based counselling and one ‘free’ phone session with your counsellor per month. Yeah, I don’t get how it’s free either, but whatever.

How much is BetterHelp monthly?

If you discover the concept of baring your soul to a stranger a bit awks, filtering that through immediate messaging might be helpful. You will not get the exact same connection as with face-to-face counselling, but the semi-anonymity might make it easier to open if you’ve been consuming two bottles of rum and dancing around in your dead nan’s wedding dress every night.

She first ascertained the scale of my stress and anxiety, what activates it– social scenarios, meeting people for the very first time– and then dived headlong into my fractious childhood (divorced moms and dads, strained familial relationships, bullied in junior school
